IELTS essay grading is a great way to get writing feedback by our team of expert Magoosh tutors! We are excited to be able to offer this service to our IELTS students, and want to share some tips on how you can make the most of it!
Use your essay wisely! Give yourself time to learn and improve.
You will have 4 graded essays if you have a 6-month Magoosh IELTS Premium Subscription and 1 graded essay with a 1-month subsription. In either case, you are in control of when you submit an essay for grading. We recommend that you submit an essay when you are ready for feedback and have time to work on your writing. In other words, avoid submitting your graded essay at the last minute, just before you take the exam. Your score report will identify your greatest area of weakness in writing. Plan to use the feedback you receive to focus your studies in the days and weeks before your test date!
Review the essay thoroughly.
Take the time to review the grading rubrics and other resources to understand your score. After you receive the score report, you should spend some time analyzing it yourself in order to understand why you received that score and how you can improve. There are plenty of tools that can help you to do this! Here are a few ideas:
- Paste your essay into a word processor like Microsoft Word. Many of these processors include spelling and grammar checking to help you identify and fix errors.
- Use free online spelling and grammar check resources such as Grammarly.com, Hemingway editor
- Use the Magoosh Complete Guide to IELTS Writing Task 1 and/or the Complete Guide to IELTS Writing Task 2 to learn more about the style, tone, and structure you should use to maximize your IELTS essay score.
- Take the time to really understand your score and the grading rubric. Many students can make small adjustments, such as writing a clear thesis statement or breaking up their essay into appropriate paragraphs, for immediate score boosts. Understand the limitations of Magoosh IELTS essay grading
Our team of expert tutors will provide you with a score based on the official IELTS scoring rubrics as well as some general tips and advice to improve your score. We are a small team with many students, and unfortunately we can’t provide more detailed writing advice to all of our students.
Once you receive a graded essay, you are welcome to respond to the tutor to ask for additional resources. Our tutors can provide you with more resources to learn about a specific topic, or provide another general example from your essay to support their feedback.
If you need more personalized attention, you may want to look for a personal tutor who can work through the essay with you and identify specific weaknesses or areas for improvement.
Work on your “big picture” English skills
It will probably take a while to see a significant increase in your writing score. In order to improve your score, you need to work on your “big picture” English skills. One important way to do this is to immerse yourself in English as much as possible. If you are exposed to high quality English writing on a regular basis, you will improve your general English skills. This is essential to improve on the IELTS essay! Spend time every day reading, writing, listening and speaking in English.

How to Incorporate Essay Grading into Your Magoosh IELTS Study Plan
We encourage students to use one of our IELTS study schedules. While we don't strictly require the use of essay grading in our study schedules, it can definitely be useful.
If your Magoosh IELTS plan comes with just one essay credit, it's good to use that credit in the first week of your study plan. That way you can check your Writing "baseline" and get some feedback on how you should improve over the course of your study schedule.
If you have four essay credits, it's still get one essay scored at the beginning. However, from there, you should space your remaining essays evenly throughout the rest of your schedule. That way, you can periodically re-check your progress. And the feedback you receive can help you decide which Writing skills to focus on in a given week.
